What happens after you install

What the tracker sends when someone opens a page, why a visit takes about a minute to appear, and what you see until the first one arrives.

When someone opens a page

As soon as a page with your line loads, the tracker does two things:

  1. It sends a page view. One small message with the page address, the page the visitor came from, and the width of their browser window.
  2. It fetches your event rules. A second, small request loads the clicks, forms and other events you set up in the dashboard, so they can be tracked on that page. It carries no visitor data. See track clicks, forms and sales.

After that, the tracker only sends a message when something happens:

  • When the visitor leaves the page or switches tabs: how many seconds the page was visible. This is what Session time is made from.
  • When they click a link to another site, an email link or a phone link.
  • When an event fires: a button click, a form being sent, a file download, or one of your own events.

Messages go out with the browser’s built-in “send in the background” method, so they never slow the page down or hold up a link.

What the server adds

The browser doesn’t send who the visitor is. Crustat’s server works out a few things itself: the country, region and city (from the visitor’s connection; the IP address itself is never stored), the browser, the operating system, the device type, where the visit came from (search, social, email and so on), any campaign tags in the address, and a visitor code that changes every day. None of it uses a cookie, and nothing is stored on the visitor’s device. The full list is in what we collect.

The one-minute delay

Expect about a minute between a real visit and seeing it in your dashboard. If you open your site and check straight away, seeing nothing yet is normal.

Before the first visit

Until your site has its first visit:

  • Your site’s stats page shows Waiting for your first visit, with your line, the AI agent prompt and a link to the platform steps.
  • On Site settings → Install, the badge says No visits yet.
  • On All sites, the site’s card says Waiting for the first visit.

The Install page and the stats page check again every 30 seconds by themselves. When the first visit arrives, the badge changes to Working since and the day, the card says Live, and your stats page fills in.

Local addresses are skipped

The tracker sends nothing on localhost, 127.0.0.1 or [::1], so working on your site on your own computer doesn’t add to your numbers. Test on a real address instead. A staging site on a subdomain, like staging.example.com, shows up together with your main site. One on a different address is recorded but left out of your stats unless you add it to the site, see add and manage your sites.

Your own visits

Once you’ve seen your first visit, you’ll probably want your own browsing left out. See ignore your own visits.
